APPLICATION NOTES AND CLARIFICATIONS
Canon name: This kind of thing gets messy with "series set in the same universe that have different names on each entry," just do your best. If your character is a tabletop game character from a specific setting (eg Shadowrun, Forgotten Realms), use the name of that setting for their canon while still indicating their original status (eg "Shadowrun (OC)").Canon point: While we understand the impulse to avoid spoiling your fellow players, if your character is dead at their canon point, please indicate so explicitly!
Canon intensity: This section is a mix of "what is the canon genre?," "what kind of content warnings does your canon/character come with?" and "how explicit does your canon get when Bad Things happen?" The aim of this question is so that mods can calibrate personalized events to better suit your character and play style. Remember that the goal is to NOT break characters beyond repair and help us adjust accordingly!
World information: Although this question is primarily aimed at OCs, a bit of information on canons the mods aren't familiar with never goes amiss! Please do NOT link a wiki for this section - the goal is to have a few immediate bits of information that mods can quickly reference, such as technology level, the amount of supernatural that goes on in your character's world, etc.
AU Information: This section is to talk about how your AU version of the character (including CRAUs, aka characters imported from other RPs) differs from their canon self. Generally speaking, the mod team is looking for a heads' up about what to expect to be different from the canon version of the character; you can hash out further details of differences in other sections as needed.
For CRAUs specifically, we would like a note of what game they were played in and for how long, as well as (if it wasn't a well-known game) a note on the tone and content of it. Although we request that samples be recent (within the last two years), we do not require that the game your character is coming from be within that timeframe. If you want to bring your character from all the way back in the early days of Milliways, by all means do so. However, we do request that a list of their major non-canon relationships from the RP be included somewhere on your character's journal, as a way to give a heads-up to players who may be playing some other version of your character's crosscanon buddy.
Character biofacts: If your character is trans, we don't care what's in their pants, the gender entry is looking for potential roommates for characters whose players don't want them in mixed-gender rooms and that's it. For age, if your character ages in a non-human way, please give both numerical (to the best of your knowledge) and approximate maturity. (Reminder that characters should be ~13 years old/equivalent unless mods have granted an exception ahead of time.) For species, please just note what the species is - further details should go under the "abilities" section if there's significant differences from normal human.
About the Character: Wiki links for history are acceptable, but we do want to see 500 words of your own words about the character. We also do not want to see exclusively history OR personality. If you hand us something that is only one or the other, revisions will be requested. The About section is a thumbnail of your character's history, personality, and motivations; while you don't need to give us every detail of how they think, it should be enough that someone who has never encountered this character before would have an idea of how they would act and why, in a normal set of circumstances.
A few thoughts to keep in mind as you write your about: What is the character afraid of? How does the character react to situations they can't control? How do they present themselves to strangers? What are their feelings on death and killing? What kinds of things would it be disturbing for a stranger to know about them without ever having met them before? These questions are not intended to be the full extent of your About section (which should be the meatiest section of your application unless you've got some truly complicated abilities); rather, they're intended as examples of specific bits of information that mods can use to help personalize events and occurances for your character.
Abilities: Bullet points are fine. Detailed paragraphs where you talk about how this JRPG's magic system is actually string theory in a fantasy suit is also fine, but please provide mods some form of quick reference before you go off into the reeds. We're interested in a general outline of what your character can do more than we are in nitty-gritty specifics; you don't need to list every single spell your wizard can cast. Wiki links are allowed, but we prefer the clarity of player-written bullet points.
There are a few abilities that the mods do need to know about for various setting-specific or potentially game-breaking reasons. These include but are not limited to: Supernatural perceptions (visions, seeing spirits, sensing magical energy, etc); necromancy, death powers, and/or the ability to revive the dead; hammerspace/dimensional pockets and storage; weather manipulation and similar large-scale effects; time-related powers (time travel, prophecy, sundry powers that let you see past events in a particular place); dream-viewing and manipulation; plant communication and/or manipulation; telepathy and empathy-as-in-emotion-sensing; and teleportation and dimension-hopping abilities. Generally, characters will keep their powers (including the above list), unless we contact you specifically to discuss nerfed powers.
Noteworthy items: As noted in the FAQ, characters arrive with only what they are carrying (or nearby items they can carry in select circumstances). They may bring one animal/creature with the same size limits as other items (ie maximum size of a small motorcycle unless they can and do routinely lift it for themselves). If an item or creature has special abilities that function independently from a character's, please them here rather than under the character's abilities. Also, if your character is carrying any kind of mirror, even a tiny one built into a makeup compact, please note it here!
Player content notes/squicks: If there is something not already covered on the Session 0 page that you would like to request warnings for, this is the place to do it. In addition, if there's something that you're fine with having happen in general but do not want to happen specifically to your character, or something that you can handle but only in a specific format (eg text only, non-graphic descriptions), you can do so here.
Samples: We don't care whether your samples are prose or action style or even a network texting thread. What we're looking for is 1) at least one interaction with another character that demonstrates your character's personality 2) enough dialogue to be able to judge your grasp of the character's voice 3) some amount of the character's internal thoughts/introspection/beneath-the-surface aspects. Any sample that meets these requirements and is no more than two years old is acceptable, and you may use multiple samples if you feel the need. If we don't think your sample is enough as provided, we'll just ask for revisions.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Please respond to this post with a link to your application. We prefer that applications be posted to the journal you will use for the game. If you choose to make the entry protected, you must grant access to
Please do not perform major modifications to the format of the application in the name of aesthetics. The form is intentionally simple so that it works with existing Dreamwidth accessibility tools (forcing site skin on entry pages, dark mode, etc).
QUEUE & JUDGEMENT
Applications at Pluviosa run on a queue-based system. There is no specific app period; apps will remain open until player cap is reached and the backlog of waitlisted characters reaches five or more players, at which point applications for new players only will close. (Existing players can still submit applications for second or third characters even if new player applications are closed.)
Applications are judged in batches as moderator time allows. (The goal for this is approximately every two weeks; however, there may be longer periods if the mod team is focused on an intense event, etc.) Applications are sorted into a queue at that time. Applications over the limit of player slots in the game will be given the WAITLISTED status.
APPLICATION QUEUE FAQ
What does it mean to be waitlisted? Waitlisted players are not formally accepted to the game, but they will be accepted as soon as there is available space, whether this is due to other players dropping or the player cap being increased. If there are people ahead of them in the queue who have had a revisions request and do not fulfill it within the deadline, they are dropped from the queue and a waitlisted player will also move upwards into the game. What does it mean to be given a revisions request? In the context of Pluviosa, a revisions request is "we want to accept you, BUT you need to do x first." They are treated as acceptances for the purpose of the queue system and player cap. While we may reject applications after giving a revision request if the player does not respond to the revisions request in a timely manner or with sufficient changes/information, a revisions request should be viewed as looking for a reason to accept a player rather than looking for a reason to reject them.
What if you get more than [remaining player slots +5] apps at once? Mods will close applications as soon as they are aware of the situation and judge applications later down the line when the time is available. EXCEPTION: The first round of applications will not close before a specific date, even if we have a hundred players apply for the opening 40 slots. (The queue will just suck for a while if that happens.)
How do reserves interact with the queue system? Reserves prevent anyone else from applying for your reserved character for two weeks from the date of your reserve. For more detailed information, please see the Reserves page.
What if I'm waitlisted and wish to retract my application? Just reply to the comment regarding your waitlist status saying so! Mods will remove you from your position in queue and give it to the next person.
What if I want to app a different character while waitlisted? As Pluviosa allows two characters to be apped at once even by new players, you should submit the application for your new character, wait for the WAITLISTED email, and then respond to your original character's application as in the above question. (You can also forego retracting your first app and just app both.) Your position in queue will be kept only if you follow this procedure (otherwise it's to the back of the line).
When can I start playing? When you get that big shiny ACCEPTED email in your notifications (and have filled out the appropriate forms). Unless we tell you something specific about your arrival, you can hit the ground running by making your own intro post; Pluviosa doesn't do big intro logs for a lot of characters arriving at one time.
